Project Earth Day 2008

Teknion Studios, New York

What It Was

Project Earth Day is a fashion show that brings together eco-friendly fashion, architecture and lighting that is now in its second year. The event is a collaboration of Emerging Green Builders, the NY chapter of USGBC. The event’s goal is to help raise awareness in each of these areas in how we can all be more eco-conscious in our habits and still maintain a high level of standards. The fashion show showcases designers from all over the nation and encourages new designers by hosting a student fashion competition.

What We Did

The goal was to change an office furniture showroom into a warm fun party and then later into an edgy and urban fashion show. Throughout the night there was a need to keep a focus on the eco-merchandise being showcased by other designers in a display near the runway. All of these elements had to have as much eco-consideration as possible to fit the mission of the show and still enable the show and merchandise to be lit in the best possible light for press and attendees.

Why It Worked

The party and show came off flawlessly with the help of the newest in LED and HID technology and more fun solutions like custom wine bottle lamps for the bars and entry way. The LED’s are crucial when it comes to saving on power consumption as well as creating a layer of vibrant color over much of the showroom and set. The custom lamps helped to give a more warm and inviting feel to some of the more frequented areas. The lamps also manifested the overall mission of re-use and recycle. The bottles were retrieved from a local bistro and the electrical hardware was from the previous year's custom lighting fixtures, reducing the amount of new materials to be purchased.
