1001 South State Street

Chicago, IL | 2017

A 500-unit rental apartment building in Chicago’s South Loop that caters to students and creative young professionals.

What It Was

1001 South State is a 500-unit rental apartment building in Chicago’s South Loop designed by Solomon Cordell Buenz (SCB). The property is located the Wabash Arts Corridor and caters to students and creative young professionals. Beyond the standard amenities, the building includes special places for residents to balance work and play, including a “makerspace” with 3D Printer and milling machine, conference and work spaces, and a rooftop lounge and terrace for entertainment and relaxation.

What We Did

This residence required a lighting strategy that would feel edgy and modern, but also meet the project’s sustainability goals. The massive outdoor amenity deck and pool/cabana area are the crown jewels of 1001 South State. To eliminate poles in the deck area, we added toe kick lighting around the pool and designed custom bollard acrylic cubes to provide night lighting. Our biggest challenge was working with three different interior designers on the project – and modifying our designs for each. Our team was also asked to create a ‘lifestyle video statement’ installation for the lobby of the building. Displayed on three 4K video screens, this unique piece makes a bold statement about the residents and surrounding neighborhood.

Why it Worked

Tapping into the creative spirit of South Loop, this new residence is also highly sustainable, having achieved LEED-Gold certification. With an abundance of amenities and a lighting strategy that enhances the modern and stylish feel, 1001 South State is becoming one of Chicago’s hottest new residences.
