Illumination 2015

The Morton Arboretum | Lisle, IL | 2015

Lightswitch re-envisioned the guest experience for the 2015-16 season, starting from the very beginning. Guests begin their journey at the redesigned Meadow Lake Magic where they find color-changing, branch-like lines of light reaching across the picturesque lake.

What It Was

For the third year in a row, Illumination has transformed The Morton Arboretum into Chicagoland’s premier holiday season destination. Guests of all ages are invited to explore the winter landscape on a mile-long walk through the Arboretum’s 50 acres of trees, which are animated with dynamic, interactive vignettes of light and sound. This year, Illumination includes several re-imagined environments, as well as guest favorites from years past.

What We Did

Lightswitch re-envisioned the guest experience for the 2015-16 season, starting from the very beginning. Guests begin their journey at the redesigned Meadow Lake Magic where they find color-changing, branch-like lines of light reaching across the picturesque lake. Last year’s most acclaimed feature, Symphony Woods, has been re-imagined with refreshed lighting and new music. Guests will delight at this brilliant spectacle of sight and sound featuring a dynamic light show set to Tchaikovsky’s classic “Nutcracker Suite” recorded by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As a complement to Symphony Woods, Lightswitch also redesigned the Garden of Light as a son et lumière show featuring contemporary holiday music. Other all-new environments include Ornament Hill, which features giant lit orbs and thousands of sparkling points of light, and Tinsel Harmony, which allows guests to change the brightness, color and intensity of the “tinsel” lights in the trees using their voices. Even guest favorites like Hug-A-Tree and Seasons Greetings feature exciting new surprises.

Why It Worked

In 2013, Lightswitch and the Arboretum started with a simple idea—See trees in a new light. Together we developed a unique and engaging experience that has quickly become one of the most celebrated holiday lighting shows in the country. Illumination has welcomed more than 210,000 visitors from 40 states and has significantly increased public awareness and attendance at the Arboretum.
