What It Was

A new craft brewery and restaurant concept is giving Evanston residents something to smile about. The brainchild of restaurant veteran Michael Smylie, Smylie Bros. is a 10-barrel brew house and restaurant that serves up local craft beer and regional cuisine.

What We Did

WRAP Architecture and Lightswitch Architectural joined forces to design the interiors and lighting, respectively, for the renovated building. In keeping with the craft concept, WRAP created a warm, homey space using natural elements like wood. Our lighting showcases these signature interior features, including the eye-catching wood-and-metal truss ceiling, which we uplighted using linear fluorescent luminaires with dimming ballasts. Managed by a DALI-based control system, the T5HO fixtures do double duty by highlighting the ceiling above and providing ambient illumination to the seating area below. We also fully integrated the lighting controls so they link to the HVAC and AV systems, all of which can be easily managed from a digital device.

Why It Worked

Like a good beer, our lighting layers multiple ingredients to create a cohesive, but unique flavor. We combined energy-efficient sources that meet code with easy-to-use, cost-saving controls and a design plan that reveals the distinctive interiors. As a finishing touch, we used our supply-assist program to ensure that the lighting was as-promised from specification through installation, resulting in additional savings for the client.
