BlizzCon

Blizzard Entertainment | Anaheim, California | 2015-2019

With our experience in concerts, our team knows how to capitalize on the intensity of fans in order to build the atmosphere of an event. Each year, we successfully create an immersive experience at BlizzCon, a convention held by video game company Blizzard Entertainment to celebrate their fans and announce their future game titles, expansions, and general updates.

WHAT IT WAS

Lightswitch designs several stages annually for BlizzCon, a convention held by video game company Blizzard Entertainment to celebrate their fans and announce their future game titles, expansions, and general updates. This event is also where all of Blizzard’s major Esports championship titles are held, such as Hearthstone, StarCraft, the Overwatch World Cup, and the World of Warcraft Championships. A record 40,000 people attended in 2018, and Blizzard has since expanded the convention every year, making it the biggest single-vendor convention in the world.

WHAT WE DID

With all of the venue’s main lights turned off during BlizzCon, Lightswitch is responsible for illuminating every square inch of the Anaheim Convention Center, creating a fully immersive experience for every guest. This translates to almost 1 million square feet of convention space that briefly becomes home to cosplay contests, game demonstrations, prop exhibits, Esports stages, and featured musical acts. Drawing on past experience with a myriad of lighting applications — as well as an enduring love for Blizzard games — our team consistently creates a welcoming space for the gaming community by lighting the cosplay contest, working with neighboring lighting designers, and assisting any incoming designers for the featured musicians.

The narrative for each stage at BlizzCon is completely different, and we do our best to honor the varying game lore and fans. The challenges presented by this event include showcasing and highlighting the intensity of the Esport stages, lighting players properly while not affecting their ability to play, and lighting for both live and remote-viewing audiences. We also make sure to craft an uninterrupted experience for attendees, maintaining the same level of immersion whether they are waiting in line for a game demo, settling in for a discussion panel, or simply standing in line for a snack.

WHY IT WORKED

With our experience in concerts, our team knows how to capitalize on the intensity of fans in order to build the atmosphere of an event. Each year, we successfully create an immersive experience at BlizzCon, helping attendees tune out the real world, if only for a few days of fun.
