Facebook MPK21: The Museum

Gehry Partners | Menlo Park, CA | 2018

In 2018, Facebook unveiled their new MPK21 headquarters expansion in Menlo Park, CA.

What It Was

In 2018, Facebook unveiled their new MPK21 headquarters expansion in Menlo Park, CA. While the building offered all the amenities of a modern tech headquarters (large open office space, a town square, restaurants and art installations) it also added one critical feature – a 20,000 square foot multipurpose assembly space known as the Museum. Configurable into multiple smaller spaces or as one large theatrical space accommodating 2,300 guests, the Museum serves Facebook’s needs to entertain and inform its guests and employees.

What We Did

We had originally designed the architectural lighting for the Gehry Partners-designed MPK21 campus in 2018. As Facebook occupied its building and understood its demands of the new event space, it looked to diversify the flexible event space. Therefore, we added a streamlined permanent theatrical system to the existing architectural design with brand new fixtures, motors, and trusses. In addition, we enhanced the space with a focus on versatility and long-term maintenance to create a variety of looks for multiple stage configurations.

Why It Worked

Combining a broadcast system and architectural accent lighting within the same design was an exciting challenge. Building upon on our familiarity with the space and the original architectural lighting design, our team developed creative solutions for working around existing infrastructure within the confines of an already developed space. We brought in multiple fixtures to compare and contrast what would best match their future uses of the space between internal workshops and broadcasted online streaming events. With MPK21’s unique space that can accommodate a variety of events, we established a high-end theatrical lighting design that can enhance any future event.
