‘Flight Paths’, an environmental installation conceived by artist Steve Waldeck has been 13 years in the making. Designed to give travellers a sense of walking through a forest, Flight Path features a simulated tree canopy, bird sounds, and lighting. It occupies an entire 450-foot long underground tunnel between Concourses A and B at the world’s busiest airport.
Lightswitch was retained by system integrators ILC to provide design for the lighting and video, as well as created bespoke content for two large 4mm LED screens to feature realistic animations of native Georgia birds and animals. The intent of the screens was to create the sense of a ‘canopy to the sky’ with bird flight and slowly passing clouds. We worked closely with the artist Steve Waldeck, Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport’s Department of Art, the team at ILC and general contractor SVI Themed Construction Solutions to manage everyone’s expectations and ensure all input was taken and included in the final product.
Research, review, and planning ensured the video content was accurate and believable, and attention to detail resulted in a coherent, holistic experience for the viewer. Steve Waldeck conceived a brilliant design, and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was bold to commission the piece that sure makes a difference in the hectic day of millions of travelers.
