WHAT IT WAS

FM Global, a leading mutual insurance company, participates in training and engineering to support their clients’ needs, especially when it comes to mitigation. Their Norwood Learning Center is an experiential training space that is part museum, part interactive display, and part flexible meeting room. Lightswitch was brought in to design lighting for the space, which is located inside an existing building, presenting its own set of challenges and limitations.

WHAT WE DID

Lightswitch designed the lighting for the entire space, some of it running from iPads, some adjusting in real time from internet data, and some of it static. The training center brought forward the idea for a game consisting of complex, zooming rings of light. Our team identified the type of fixture that would allow for the necessary zoom range and installed it at a height that makes the game approachable and playable by anyone.

Lightswitch worked to balance museum-quality lighting with the magic of a live show. Every light is LED, and as passive as possible, which keeps costs and maintenance down throughout the long lifespan of the room.

WHY IT WORKED

By balancing carefully curated design with organically influenced lighting cues, Lightswitch created an experience in which every interaction reminds participants of the unpredictability of the situations that FM Global exists to mitigate. Our inclusion of entertainment fixtures with multiple functions means that the Learning Center can serve as a museum exhibit, fun game setting, and meeting room simultaneously, without enlisting an overwhelming amount of equipment.
