Legendary guitarist Johnny Marr is a long, long time Lightswitch friend and client - we’ve known him for 30 years!! When he headed out on the road to support his new critically acclaimed, long-awaited solo album ‘The Messenger’ he turned once again to Lightswitch for design help.
Johnny wanted to play a mix of venues, and get back in contact with his fan base by playing clubs and theaters, as well as the summer festival circuit worldwide. The economics of small venues makes it unrealistic to tour a lighting system, so we designed a ‘concept’ that could be executed in venues large and small, and crafted a ‘design brief’ that could quickly and easily convey Johnny aesthetic to lighting staff in venues worldwide. This, in combination with modest equipment packages added in select key venues, gave the show a unique, distinctive and consistent look.
Bigger isn’t always better, and sometimes the more modest projects force us to make the most discriminating design decisions. In this case, this was perfect as Johnny wanted a stripped down, stark, minimalist ’80’s new wave’ look, with restrained use of color, texture and direction. By clearly defining the aesthetic he desired, we were able to help Johnny maintain visual control over his show an a wide range of venues worldwide.
