JUMP – Jack's Urban Meeting Place

Adamson Associates | Boise, Idaho | 2015

JUMP, or Jack's Urban Meeting Place, is a project that allows guests to leap into anything that sparks their imagination and enriches their lives. We knew this wildly ambitious building needed an unconventional lighting system to allow visitors’ eyes to play along with their minds.

What it Was

JUMP, or Jack's Urban Meeting Place, is a project that allows visitors to leap into anything that sparks their imagination and enriches their lives. The exterior environment of the experience features a beautiful park complete with an outdoor amphitheater, sweeping terraces, meeting spaces, and play areas, all with unique views of the city and surrounding mountains. There is plenty of space to roam, structures to climb on, and, perhaps most remarkably, an opportunity to travel via a five-story slide instead of taking the stairs.

Inside, the building boasts a studio stocked with audio and video equipment, an industrial-grade kitchen for innovating recipes, and another space with building tools and a 3D printer. There is also a dance studio, an area purely dedicated to brainstorming, and an elegant event space. Finally, the site’s private collection of vintage tractors was really what started it all. This widely distributed, exploratory exhibit showcases the inventiveness and creativity of past generations.

What We Did

JUMP manages to cohere a staggering number of disparate creative opportunities into an imaginatively stimulating experience for guests. We knew this wildly ambitious building needed an unconventional lighting system to allow visitors’ eyes to play along with their minds.

Lightswitch engineered a highly flexible control system for JUMP that allows users to tailor the visual composition of most rooms to their needs. For example, the morning lighting settings can vary greatly from the afternoon or evening for all the studio spaces. The building’s IT manager embraces the system and remarkably creates unique lighting settings for most community events. We are proud to see our work put to such unique and innovative use.

Why it Worked

Our team successfully created a lighting design that supports all the building's wide-ranging functions – from the offices, to the yoga studio, to the grand ballroom – in a glorious palette of color, while still allowing the nearby mountains to be the star of the show during the daytime. Our design encourages JUMP’s visitors to fully embrace their creative selves – whether they’re 3D printing the next big gadget, whipping up a new culinary masterpiece, or anything in between.
