Machu Picchu
and the Golden Empires of Peru

World Heritage Exhibitions / Cityneon | Boca Raton, FL | 2021

Lightswitch was brought in by World Heritage Exhibitions/Cityneon to design an exhibit at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, aiming to highlight the culture of the ancient people of Machu Picchu. Our team created the appropriate lighting environment for each gallery within the exhibit, carefully showcasing a range of historic artifacts and ushering museum-goers through an engaging, immersive history lesson.

WHAT IT WAS

Lightswitch was brought in by World Heritage Exhibitions/Cityneon to design an exhibit at the Boca Raton Museum of Art, aiming to highlight the culture of the ancient people of Machu Picchu. Our team created the appropriate lighting environment for each gallery within the exhibit, carefully showcasing a range of historic artifacts and ushering museum-goers through an engaging, immersive history lesson.

WHAT WE DID

Lightswitch’s task was to showcase each gallery within the exhibit while remaining conscious of the lighting requirements of the ancient, and often fragile, artifacts. Because of this, the main challenge presented by this project was lighting each gallery with the desired dramatic effect while still preserving the featured objects. We wanted guests to be able to pore over the artifacts and view them in detail, soaking up the narrative of the exhibit. However, many of the objects were sensitive and required us to observe lighting constraints. This meant we had to strike a balance between theatrical storytelling and practical lighting.

Our team also designed the truss that was used to hang lights throughout the space, which meant that we had a great amount of control over the lighting. Instead of relying on in-house lighting fixtures and hanging positions when the exhibit travels beyond Boca Raton, our specially-designed truss is now integrated into the wall system of the galleries, and will remain with the exhibit wherever it goes.

WHY IT WORKED

Despite the uphill battle presented by pandemic-induced supply-chain delays, Lightswitch was able to effectively illuminate this story of ancient Peruvians while still respecting and preserving the delicate featured artifacts. Our familiarity with the client helped us work efficiently and achieve their vision for the project. By keeping the big picture in mind, we collaborated with our fellow design teams to create an immersive and educational experience for museum visitors of all ages.
