Philips Semiconductor Showcase

Philips Lighting | 2006

For assorted reasons, we could not change the ceiling with existing light fixtures. Instead, we attached all fixtures to the walls and display structures allowing the ceiling to remain untouched.

What It Was

Philips Semiconductor wanted to build a showroom to highlight their chip components used in all types of portable electronic devices produced by many global companies. The showroom conveyed the semiconductor division as a distinct business unit within the large Philips corporation. Consistent with Philips branding guidelines, the showroom had a crisp white box appearance – “As simple as the box it comes in.”

What We Did

For assorted reasons, we could not change the ceiling with existing light fixtures. Instead, we attached all fixtures to the walls and display structures allowing the ceiling to remain untouched. A few walls were built as light boxes contributing to the ambient light level. We also used tension cable lighting systems controlled by a simple multi-scene dimming system. The client requested a crisp white light; we recommended special halogen light bulbs that produce bluer light than most halogen bulbs.

Why It Worked

In spite of logistical challenges, the balance of light from overhead fixtures and the wall light boxes provided a very comfortable visual environment with enough directional light on the product displays. The presenter used a simple handheld remote controller to brighten or dim the fixtures for video presentations. The light’s clean cool appearance provided the perfect setting for Philips chips to sparkle and intrigue corporate buyers.
