Technology Company Office

RMW architecture + interiors | Sunnyvale, CA | 2016

Lighting echoed the natural motif, while incorporating the latest technological capabilities. In the lobby, theatrical luminaires projected organic forms onto the floor from above the curving wood structure that branched out from the lobby floor and across the ceiling.

What It Was

inspired by the majestic oak groves growing in a neighboring park, this tech company office brought the outdoors in. RMW architecture + interiors used natural materials and organic forms to create a space that reflected nature. The office was also outfitted with an array of gadgets and amenities—from cutting-edge smart controls to a state-of-the-art gym—designed for its tech-savvy staff.

What We Did

Lighting echoed the natural motif, while incorporating the latest technological capabilities. In the lobby, theatrical luminaires projected organic forms onto the floor from above the curving wood structure that branched out from the lobby floor and across the ceiling. Architectural lighting revealed details such as “twig”-patterned metal canopies; it also provided functional illumination for circulation and public spaces. Lightswitch consulted with RMW on the decorative lighting, including lights inspired by branches and flowers. All lighting had to work with the client’s preferred smart control system. We specified compatible luminaires and collaborated with the engineering team to ensure they were properly integrated. The system enabled individual control of every light. It gathered traffic and occupancy data that was used to improve security and building maintenance.

Why It Worked

Our design reflected the natural forms of the architecture, while meeting the specialized needs of this tech company. When the building was later leased to another tech company, we made minor adjustments to the design for the new tenant. Both designs met California’s Title 24 - 2013 energy requirements.
