The Paine Art Center and Gardens approached Lightswitch to help create a unique and distinctive Light + Art project for the beloved institution. For nearly a decade, HYBYCOZO and Lightswitch have partnered on installations within other projects, but this is our first collaboration on a major large-scale exhibition. With a complete, defined collection of thoughtfully designed experiences within the estate and its grounds, The Nature of Light at The Paine showcases the synergy of HYBYCOZO and Lightswitch’s combined creativity in an exhibition that engages, delights, and enthralls guests of all ages.
Aaron Sherer, Executive Director of the Paine Art Center and Gardens, approached Lightswitch to help create a unique and distinctive Light + Art project for the beloved institution. The Paine Art Center and Gardens is a preserved historic estate with a mansion and gardens located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It includes public art galleries and botanic gardens on three acres and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Aaron had a vision of crafting a distinctive and thought-provoking exhibition — one that would invite guests to explore The Paine after dark in a new and intriguing way. So, The Nature of Light: An Exploration After Dark was born.
From our very first conversation, it was clear The Paine wanted to create an experience that was aligned with their ethos and aesthetic. To create a truly immersive experience, Lightswitch invited our friends from HYBYCOZO to join us.
Together, we created a mindful journey for guests both inside the mansion and throughout the gardens. Ranging from the surreal to the sublime, from the micro to the massive, The Nature of Light: An Exploration After Dark takes guests on a carefully curated path through numerous vistas and displays where they can view, touch, explore, and play with the nature of light itself.

One of the hallmarks of our work at Lightswitch is authenticity. We do not design “cookie cutter” experiences, and we try to never relocate our work from other projects. Every Lightswitch project is designed from the ground up for each client in order to meet their specific goals, needs, and desires. The Nature of Light: An Exploration After Dark resonates with guests so deeply not only because it is stunningly beautiful and intellectually challenging, but also because it feels integrally connected to its location.
The project has exceeded expectations on every metric: attendance, ticket sales, reviews, and — most importantly to us — the simple joy that guests of all ages reveal in their laughter and smiles as they experience The Nature of Light: An Exploration After Dark.
