Millennium Park Holiday Lighting

Chicago, IL | 2005

Lightswitch and Millennium Park Inc. worked together to select the elements of the park that would respond best to dramatic lighting.

What It Was

Following the success of the City of Chicago’s Millennium Park Grand Gala, Lightswitch was called upon to design distinctive, vibrant lighting ornamentation to support the city’s 2004 and 2005 Holiday season celebrations.

What We Did

Lightswitch and Millennium Park Inc. worked together to select the elements of the park that would respond best to dramatic lighting. We used CDM Pars to provide colorful texturing to the Peristyle - a full-sized replica of a 1917 monument which semi-circles a tree-lined court and fountain. A long line of Par 64s bring the expansive Chase Promenade to life with immersive color and light mirrored in the reflective surface of the giant ‘Cloud Gate’ structure. Color changing animated fixtures deliver lighting “in a swirling rainbow of colors” to the enormous trellis and ribbons of the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. In 2005, a net of LED pixels was suspended from the Trellis, providing a kinetic, dynamic anchor to the winter park.

Why It Worked

During the winter months in Chicago, darkness falls in the early afternoon. Illuminating featured landmarks invites guests to extend their visiting and social gathering into the evening hours while rewarding locals with exhilarating visuals that showcase the familiar surroundings. These architectural monuments take on a heightened significance when embraced with textures of color and light, encouraging the recollection of deeper Holiday sentiments.
