GMSI Rotunda

Griffin Museum of Science and Industry | Chicago, IL | 2024

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry wanted an all-new guest multimedia experience in the core Rotunda, and drafted Lightswitch to revisit the design we first created eight years ago.

WHAT IT WAS

The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is a science and technology museum located in Chicago, Illinois. It is housed in the Palace of Fine Arts from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition. Located at the heart of the Museum, the Main Level's Rotunda features a breathtaking 120-foot copper-domed ceiling, a historic steam locomotive, a real 727 airplane, and 1,400 feet of winding model railroad track.

In 2016 Lightswitch worked with the museum to install what at the time was a state-of-the-art lighting system to energize and enliven this important space. Nearly eight years later, the system was overdue for a refit, and the museum wanted to refresh and re-engage the space.

WHAT WE DID

Lightswitch collaborated with multimedia experience designer Supply & Demand to design an efficient and effective new lighting system that brings light, life, and color to the massive Rotunda space, granting focus and immersion to the new multi-projector AV show.

We worked with Supply & Demand to create a new immersive guest experience specifically tailored to the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry. This show provides guests with context and framework for their visit, as well as provoking more general consideration of why science matters. Interspersed between the shows are interactive experiences that invite guests to play, explore, and learn even more.

WHY IT WORKED

Lightswitch has an extensive immersive experience and museum design portfolio and has been designing for some of the world's most acclaimed museums (including The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry!) for more than three decades. For this project, we brought our legacy of experience, our bold new ideas, and our multi-decade knowledge of The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry to make sure this new guest experience fit like a glove. The result? A delighted client and engaged, excited guests.
