UN Studio and Zaha Hadid Pavilions

Chicago, IL | 2009

UN Studio and Zaha Hadid are two pavilions created for the Daniel Burnham Centennial in Chicago’s Millennium Park.

What it Was

UN Studio and Zaha Hadid are two pavilions created for the Daniel Burnham Centennial in Chicago’s Millennium Park. The pavilions were designed and named for their creators: Amsterdam Architect Ben van Berkel of UN Studio, and renowned architect and designer Zaha Hadid.

What We Did

Lightswitch collaborated with interactive lighting and projection artist Daniel Sauter to install an interactive interface that connected with the light fixtures installed on the surface of the sculpture. The installed network activates the light fixtures on contact for a highly engaging piece. As people walk in and around the sculpture, colors gow and shift beneath their feet to create a personal relationship between the viewer and the art.

Why It Worked

The final form of the pavilions created a staggeringly beautiful and striking display for the visitors of Millenium park, and were received with much critical acclaim. Lightswitch is proud of the teamwork between our production and the talented and forward-thinking architects involved in the creation of this important public space.
