Zimmer Biomet

Hamilton Exhibits | Las Vegas | 2019

Zimmer Biomet, a cutting-edge medical device manufacturer, was debuting Rosa— a revolutionary knee surgery robot that greatly minimizes patient recovery time. We brought their 12,000 square foot booth to life for the over 30,000 attendees, supporting the company’s initiatives to garner attention for their new products and engage with potential clients.

WHAT IT WAS

Lightswitch teamed up with Hamilton Exhibits to create a multi-faceted booth for Zimmer Biomet’s presence at the 2019 American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Annual Tradeshow. The recently merged Zimmer Biomet company is a cutting-edge medical device manufacturer specializing in innovations to help treat patients with bone and joint injuries. The 2019 AAOS conference was of particular significance to Zimmer Biomet, as it would signal the market debut of Rosa — a revolutionary knee surgery robot that greatly minimizes patient recovery time. We brought their 12,000 square foot booth to life for the over 30,000 attendees, supporting the company’s initiatives to garner attention for their new products and engage with potential clients.

WHAT WE DID

Lightswitch’s lighting design created two distinct zones within the exhibit, one for displaying their impressive products to passerbys, and another for meeting with clients. Our design implemented changes in color and temperature to create the dual aesthetics. In the display area, we utilized bright white lights with cooling accents to infuse the environs with a clean, high-tech feel. We also highlighted each display area with its own lighting to reduce shadow and further the futuristic ambiance. Behind the display zone, a separate area emerges like an inviting cafe. Natural textures and live trees infuse the space with the environment of an outdoor patio — a much more intimate and comfortable place to discuss sales and close deals. We added to the space’s glow by loosely focusing warm-colored foliage gobos to simulate additional dappled leaves and light. These subtle changes infused the spaces with purpose and elevated the guest experience. We delineated between the spaces by using the large, central dividing wall as the marcator between environments. Guests approaching the wall from the front display area could see the change in color and temperature, and sense it was a portal to a different purpose. The wall also functioned as a massive video surface, with TVs attached in a mosaic pattern. Each television could transition between playing its own unique video to performing as a cohesive video surface with the other televisions. Every unit was its own separate HD output, and playback, programming, and synchronization were coordinated with rigorous precision. Stemming from this video wall and running all the way to the header at the front of the booth was a soft-lit backlight that we abstractly lit with sky and clouds. This addition broke up the cement, concrete and steel of the conference center, and infused the front exhibit with a unifying blue.

WHY IT WORKED

Overall, we installed almost 1,000 linear feet of LED lighting product for the giant header surrounding the booth, over 400 moving lights for product and booth lighting, and a unified, 30,000-pixel-wide video surface spanning both walls of televisions and the LED video wall in-between. Our close collaboration with Hamilton Exhibits in the design phase along with VideoWest for lighting, video, and rigging made a massive install a seamless success. By designing two distinct lighting zones, we equipped Zimmer Biomet with a variety of settings for visitors to engage with their products and sales team. Zimmer Biomet was extremely happy with the final result, and the booth allowed them to surpass their sales goals for the weekend by a wide margin. Our installation offered a sense of progression through the different areas, without losing a feeling of brand unity. Lightswitch has a strong background in architectural and trade show lighting that well-equipped us to tackle the challenges of such a large trade show booth. We leveraged our multi-disciplinary design knowledge to create a bespoke solution for our client and team, with a final result well-tailored to the goals and initiatives of Zimmer Biomet.
