Salisbury Treescape

What It Was

Located along the hustle and bustle of Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui—one of the hottest tourist spots in Hong Kong—Salisbury Treescape is a series of the tree-like canopy that pays tribute to the urban nature along the harbour front. Stretching from the J2 exit of Tsim Sha Tsui east MTR station to the bus stops at Victoria Dockside, Salisbury Treescape extends the tree canopy along Salisbury Road to form an enchanting streetscape immersed in nature.

What We Did

Our challenge for this project was the limited installation space. The only place we could locate the lights was the wall by the trunks, where we placed powerful in-ground uplights. We paid great attention to glare control for pedestrians by using a narrow beam lens and honeycomb louver. Down the escalator, there are perforated ceiling lightboxes which we worked in details down to 1mm in order to hide the light source and to maximize the effect. At night, the dim street lights reflect on the canopy to create a romantic golden-yellow passage.

Why It Worked

Often known as one of the densest cities in the world, urban nature is a much-cherished treasure in Hong Kong. By carefully merging architecture with nature, Salisbury Treescape provides an alternative imagination to the future of public infrastructure.
