Hong Kong Jockey Club - Happy Valley PS3 Restaurant

DWP Architecture | Hong Kong | 2012

Lightswitch and Lightswitch Architectural partnered with DWP Architecture to create a restaurant that was both fresh and in keeping with the history of the 128-year-old club.

What It Was

Hoping to entice a younger generation of patrons, the Hong Kong Jockey Club took a gamble on a new track-side restaurant at its Happy Valley race track. The club transformed a former open-air public betting area into a swank, cosmopolitan bar and restaurant that features views of the track and iPads for betting.

What We Did

Lightswitch and Lightswitch Architectural partnered with DWP Architecture to create a restaurant that was both fresh and in keeping with the history of the 128-year-old club. Color-changing, LED-lined ceiling coves delineate the clean, modern architectural lines, while custom-designed snaffle bit drum pendants are a clever reference to horse racing. Mood lighting is balanced by high illuminance levels on tables and circulation spaces, so that guests of all ages have sufficient light to place bets and dine.

Why It Worked

With some nods to the past and glimpses of the future, the lighting accommodates the functional needs of older guests, while also resonating aesthetically with a younger crowd. Our design also serves the client. By balancing the use of LEDs with less costly halogen lamps and by seamlessly integrating the new lighting and control systems with the casino’s existing electrical infrastructure, Lightswitch achieved the desired ambiance without sacrificing budget.
