Hong Kong Jockey Club - STRC Private Boxes

Inarc | Hong Kong | 2012

Outfitted with dark, rich wood interiors, the private box suite needed lighting that would complement the materials and finishes chosen by Inarc and also provide sufficient illumination for older members.

What It Was

To create a sophisticated, upscale experience for its higher status club members, the Hong Kong Jockey Club transformed an existing 1,300-square-meter restaurant at its Sha Tin racecourse into a new private box suite. Interior design firm Inarc designed the renovation, which included the addition of a lobby, buffet areas, open dining areas and a private dining room.

What We Did

Outfitted with dark, rich wood interiors, the private box suite needed lighting that would complement the materials and finishes chosen by Inarc and also provide sufficient illumination for older members. Lightswitch designed the lighting for all front of house areas, including the lobby, dining areas and buffets, to achieve both objectives. We used cove lighting to delineate the corridors and LED tape around the buffet to give it extra prominence. The source’s warm-white color reveals the richness and depth of the wood walls and millwork. Downlights were fitted with LED retrofit lamps and special reflectors to minimize glare for aging eyes.

Why It Worked

As HKJC’s lighting designer of record for its club-wide renovation program, Lightswitch has illuminated a variety of spaces with unique and creative lighting solutions that respond to the needs of the space. For Sha Tin’s private boxes, we designed lighting that suited both the interiors and guests. We also worked with the client and interior design team to ensure that the retrofit LED downlights—a relatively new product at the time—met the projects’ illuminance requirements.
