Nintendo E3 2019

Ralph Miller Productions | Los Angeles | 2019

We designed all of the lighting for Nintendo’s 20,000 square foot immersive exhibit at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in LA. The exhibit featured hits of the show, including “Luigi’s Castle” and “Pokémon Sword & Shield”, as well as additional gameplay demos and a live entertainment broadcast studio.

WHAT IT WAS

Nintendo once again had a huge presence at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles. This year, the 20,000 square foot exhibit featured a separate immersive experience promoting the new “Luigi’s Castle” game and a gameplay arena for “Pokémon Sword & Shield”, as well as additional gameplay demos and a live internet broadcast studio.

WHAT WE DID

Working again with Ralph Miller Productions, we designed lighting for the entire exhibit space. The immersive “Luigi’s Castle” experience made use of UV lighting, interactive projections, fog effects, and kinetic props all choreographed to a looping sequence and punctuated by guest-triggered interaction. The “Pokémon Sword & Shield” arena featured a timed gameplay sequence controlled and managed by the exhibit staff as they moved guests through the demo. The exhibit space’s remaining gameplay demos were designed with a lively and colorful environment. We also ensured that the broadcast studio perched above the exhibit was lit for continuous webcast capabilities.

WHY IT WORKED

Nintendo has a reputation for immersive-themed environments and experiences to launch new game titles at E3. This year’s two entries were hits of the show, with guests waiting hours to get in. The controlled environment of “Luigi’s Castle” packed with theatrical effects was on par with a full-fledged theme park attraction, and the rest of the exhibit space provided the upbeat and lively environment that embodies the Nintendo brand.
