Nintendo E3 2009

Los Angeles | 2009

Lightswitch returned to collaborate with Ralph Miller Productions, Entertainment Lighting Services, Kish Rigging, and the rest of the Nintendo team once again.

What It Was

E3 was back, and although the economy was slow, excitement surrounded the venerable gaming conference’s return to its former incarnation after a two-year hiatus. Nintendo decided to find the appropriate point between the extravagant and the fiscally responsible, and with a tight schedule and economic budget, efficiency and effectiveness was the goal.

What We Did

Lightswitch returned to collaborate with Ralph Miller Productions, Entertainment Lighting Services, Kish Rigging, and the rest of the Nintendo team once again. Developing an economically and logistically feasible design that met the budget and scheduling goals, we created a simple yet strong design scheme to play off the layered and dimensional exhibit architecture. Utilizing a hierarchy of white light in various temperatures, the exhibit’s graphic elements were never in competition with the environmental media. A layer of colored light and animation was programmed to sync with the media and add life and movement throughout the space while not distracting or overpowering corporate and product branding.

Why It Worked

The simple approach allowed for the entire lighting system to be easily installed in less than 24 hours simultaneous to much of the exhibit, while still looking substantial when completed. The brightly illuminated environment contrasted with the many other exhibits at the show, both in illumination as well as sophistication. The Nintendo brand appeared cutting-edge, respectable and relevant, while the exhibit itself proved to be a case of excellence in efficiency. Photography by Susy Shearer
