Nintendo E3 2012

Los Angeles | 2012

Over the past several years, Lightswitch has worked with Ralph Miller Productions and Nintendo of America to develop a branded look for Nintendo’s E3 exhibits.

What It Was

Fans of classic Nintendo titles like Donkey Kong and Zelda were given a rare treat at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo - they got to step inside some of their favorite games. Nintendo Land™ the first game suite that will be released for the new WiiU system, is a virtual theme park filled with characters from its most popular games. To introduce the platform, Nintendo recreated the elements of the game’s architecture inside the booth.

What We Did

Over the past several years, Lightswitch has worked with Ralph Miller Productions and Nintendo of America to develop a branded look for Nintendo’s E3 exhibits. Way Out West Design and Warp Corp. returned to create an architectural envelope to surround the booth and frame the visitor experience. This year, the team took the concept to a new level, adding Nintendo Land™ game elements while maintaining consistency with the existing brand architecture. A suspended wall created privacy and security during set-up, so that the reveal would be a surprise. Playing in a loop on the exterior of the envelope, a dynamic light show and upbeat sound track by AUDISEE Sound attracted attendees’ attention from the exhibit floor. Inside, visitors were invited to play Nintendo Land™ games. The gaming areas were highlighted by theatrical-style lighting that changed color and intensity to match the sound and video effects for each game.

Why It Worked

With years of experience designing and installing exhibit lighting at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Lightswitch is well equipped to address the unique challenges of the space. Our expertise allowed us to execute Nintendo’s exhibit concept efficiently and effectively. By using lightweight, low-power LED fixtures, we reduced weight and electrical requirements, resulting in increased efficiency without aesthetic compromise. Many considered the booth to be the hit of E3 2012, and judging by the throngs of visitors, we would agree!
