Virgin Galactic LauncherOne Announcement

San Antonio Airport | 2015

Working with event producer Fritha Knudsen, we rapidly designed an efficient, cost effective and targeted event to announce this audacious concept to partners, customers and the media.

What It Was

Continuing their growth as the leader in commercial space ventures, Virgin Galactic turned to Lightswitch to design an announcement event for their latest venture – conversion of commercial Boeing 747-400 ‘Cosmic Girl’ from passenger use with Virgin Atlantic to utilization as a launch aircraft for Virgin Galactics ‘LauncherOne’ program. LauncherOne will mounted be to the carrier aircrafts left wing, adjacent to a position used on occasion by 747’s to ferry a fifth engine.

What We Did

Working with event producer Fritha Knudsen, we rapidly designed an efficient, cost effective and targeted event to announce this audacious concept to partners, customers and the media. Using all LED fixtures to support Virgin Groups green commitment, we designed a flexible and rapidly deployed lighting and AV system, all installed in a day in the challenging environment of a working aircraft hangar with a fully fueled 747-400!

Why It Worked

With only three weeks from concept to execution, Lightswitch’s ‘deep bench’ and thorough understanding of the Virgin Galactic brand was invaluable. The event was a great success, and Virgin Galactic Founder Sir Richard Branson said ‘The Boeing 747 has a very special place in my heart: we began service on my first airline, Virgin Atlantic, with just one leased 747. I never imagined that today one of our 747’s would get a second chance and help open our access to space. I’m absolutely thrilled that Cosmic Girl can stay in the Virgin family – and truly live up to her name’ Lightswitch was absolutely thrilled to be part of this event too!
