Virgin Galactic - SpaceShipTwo Unveiling

Mojave Air and Space Port | 2009

Lightswitch designed and implemented a massive light show which could be seen for miles across the desert, generating attention and hype days before the unveiling.

What It Was

When Virgin Galactic wanted to unveil the SpaceShipTwo, the world’s first commercial spacecraft, they came to Lightswitch's long-time collaborators at Group Delphi to produce this incredible event. The Mojave Air and Space Port provided a breathtaking backdrop for this historic occasion. The craft's grand unveiling on the runway followed a press conference and preceded an evening party in temporary structures on a day that saw freezing temperatures and gale-force winds.

What We Did

Lightswitch designed and implemented a massive light show which could be seen for miles across the desert, generating attention and hype days before the unveiling. Besides the runway, Lightswitch designed the lighting for five additional environments at the site: a press conference area, an Absolut Ice Bar, two inflatable translucent “party pods,” and an exterior lounge.

Why It Worked

Lightswitch’s multidisciplinary background in lighting helped us create unique environments that were warm, welcoming, surreal, and epic, and combine them under an overall concept that was utterly unforgettable and very ‘Virgin Galactic.’ By assembling a team of skilled individuals we were able to efficiently tackle the demands of such a large-scale event. When the weather conditions turned extreme, Group Delphi's perfectly-engineered contingency plans allowed the Lightswitch team to safely and rapidly clear personnel from the site before it became dangerous. Despite the destruction that ensued, the event was viewed by all as a massive success.
