Virgin Galactic SpaceShip Two Series 2 Unveiling

Mojave Air and Space Port | 2016

Once again proudly working with space pioneers Virgin Galactic and event producer Fritha Knudsen, Lightswitch provided lighting and visual design for the event staged in Virgins hanger ‘FAITH’.

What It Was

In an emotional and exciting event, Richard Branson unveiled Virgin Galactic’s much anticipated second SpaceShipTwo at a ceremony in Mojave, CA, attended by his family, Virgin Galactic’s Founder Future Astronauts, stakeholders and partners. Professor Stephen Hawking named the new vehicle Virgin Spaceship (VSS) Unity via a recorded speech and said, “I would be very proud to fly on this spaceship.”

What We Did

Once again proudly working with space pioneers Virgin Galactic and event producer Fritha Knudsen, Lightswitch provided lighting and visual design for the event staged in Virgins hanger ‘FAITH’. A ‘theatre in the round’ environment was conceived, that presented the breathtaking new SpaceShipTwo literally in the audiences laps. Resplendent in her dazling new reflective chrome livery, SpaceShipTwo was dramatically lit with care and attention to detail, maximizing impact whilst minimizing glare from stray reflections. Lighting also featured the inside of the hanger, SpaceShipTwo’s mother ship WhiteKnight Two, and the assembled design, engineering and construction team responsible for the new vehicle. Emotive lighting for the live event was balanced with the needs of TV and video crews from around the world, making the unveiling memorable whether attending live or watching remotely.

Why It Worked

Innovative design, bold thinking and detailed planning & collaboration with Virgin were all essential, but success was due to another important factor. Lightswitch has worked with Virgin Galactic since 2006 – a ten-year track record of helping the company develop memorable events and experiences. Lightswitch has a deep understanding of the Virgin Galactic brand, a history of collaboration with their team, and a shared passion for their mission. These all combined to create a distinctive, bespoke and ‘on brand’ experience the assembled guests, dignitaries and press will not soon forget.
